what do you use to/how do you color your clay?

I use Mason stains, which has involved a heartbreaking amount of trial and error (think! purples burning out to blues or greys, and rich colors turning brown), but has been so, so worth it! I truly cannot imagine going back to unstained clay.

There is a hidden (very labor intensive) element to counterbalance the playfulness of all my pieces. I’ve watched a lot of people’s eyes glaze over while I’ve described this to them, but here goes:

I turn B-mix clay (usually a combination of speckled & regular to dilute the speckles to a more freckled intensity) into slip, mix the Mason stain (anywhere from 2.5-10% depending on the color, though I do prefer pastel hues) into the slip, and dry it out so I can throw or build with it.

why is your work so expensive?

See above for the process for how I color my clay just to build the foundation for a piece, and then factor in any surface design elements (carving, glazing, marbling) that can add exponentially to the time it takes to finish a piece. It’s said often, but no potter prices their pieces what they are truly worth, factoring in time, material costs, etcetc.
